About Lower Dolpo Trek

Trekking in the Lower Dolpo region allows exploring a part of the very distinctive community and environment. Lower Dolpo Trek leads far away from the daily hustle of your life in unspoiled and pristine Dolpo region. The trek happens in the remote western region of Nepal, which is highly influenced by Tibetan culture and norms. As it is a very remote part of Nepal, only a handful of travelers has traversed the region. The trail is not crowded and is perfect for those who want to have a peaceful venture in nature.

Enjoying tempting views of nature, you cross Numa La Pass and Baga La Pass. The most beautiful part of Lower Dolpo Trek 20 Days is Shey Phoksundo Lake. The gorgeous turquoise color of the lake surrounded by glistening snow-capped Himalayan mountains is a heavenly view that not only soothe your eyes but heart as well. Known as the jewel of the Dolpo region, Shey Phoksundo Lake is the second largest lake in Nepal. Most part of the Lower Dolpo Trek passes through dense forests, where you get to see diverse flora and fauna as well.

Land at the airport and meet with our representative at the terminal gate. He will transfer you to the hotel and quickly brief you about the day program. Rest for a few hours and meet with other team members over welcome dinner.

Begin the day with a visit to a few monuments like the holy Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Later, in the day, you will arrange and check all the gears along with your guide. If any of it is broken or not working properly, you will also do shopping.

Today, you fly to Nepaljung. The flight will offer you aerial views of the lush green hill and settlement area. Upon landing at the airport, you move to the hotel. Rest for the day and visit the nearby markets.

It is the first day of your trek, but before that, you will take a short flight to Jhupal, the starting point of the trek. From here, you will slowly ascend to Dunai through terraced farms and small villages.

The trail passes through rocky and blue pine trees. With many ascends and descends, you pass through Thuli Bheri River and small villages. Leaving Byasghar village, the trail becomes difficult and moves through a narrow rocky section to Lingdo.

The day begins with ascending to Lahini Odar. Today, the trail offers the most beautiful views. Passing through mani wall and chortens, you walk by rock-strewn trail. Further, you cross a long suspension bridge and reach Laisicap. From here, trekking through a lush forest of pine, you descend and ascend to a riverbed. A short walk from here takes you to Laini Odar.

After having breakfast, you begin gradually ascending towards Shim Odar. The trail will be difficult at some point and passes through small settlement areas & villages. You will also get to see the wonderful scenery on the way.

From today onwards, you will notice a change in vegetation and landscape. Most parts of the trail will offer barren landscape views. From Shim Odar, the trail ascends passes through a few villages and small bushes. Further, following Tarap Khola, you pass by mani walls & chortens and reach Dho.

Today is a rest day. You will explore and have enough time to gain back your energy. Here, you will visit several monasteries around the village including the oldest one, Ribo Bumpa Monastery. This monastery is believed to be built 1000 years ago.

The trail gradually ascends towards the Upper Tarap Valley through lush grasslands along a river. Following Tarpa Chu, you move forwards enjoying gorgeous landscape views. Passing by Tokyu village, you climb up to Numala Base Camp. In Tokyu village, you visit an ancient monastery of the Chiba sect.

Today is going to be a tough day. You begin trekking towards Numa La Pass early in the morning. The trail will be steep and rugged. From the top of the pass, you get to see tempting views of the surrounding. The trail then descends gradually and leads you to Daingar for a night stay.

Another long and tough trekking day. The day begins early, and start ascending on a steep path that leads to the top of Bagla La Pass. Upon reaching the top of the pass, you get to witness a fantastic landscape and snow-capped mountains, including Mt. Kanjirowa. Further, the trail drops down to Yak Kharka, where you will spend the night.

We spend most of today’s treks on trails alongside beautiful pine forests and alpine vegetation. After trekking for a short while on an easy trail with only gradual highs and lows, we reach Ringmo Village. The village is a traditional Tibetan village of the Dolpo region. Overnight in Ringmo.

Today we explore the great Phoksundo Lake and camp at its shores. We see yak caravans moving in and out of Ringmo mostly towards Tibetan borders on remote mountain trails. The scene is even depicted in a Hollywood movie ‘Caravan’ shot mostly in this location. On our way to the lake, we also tour a nearby monastery. Upon reaching the Phoksundo Lake, we can enjoy a relaxing walk on the serene lake’s shores. Overnight at Phoksundo.

From Ringmo, you gradually descend to Rechi. The trail then ascends and steeply descends. Crossing a Khola, you reach old Rike village and pass by a lovely waterfall. Further, you trek on the narrow forested path and reach Rechi.

After having breakfast, you begin trekking towards Kagbeni. The trail passes through small villages and lush forests. Likewise, you will get to see wonderful views on the way.

The trail passes through small villages and descends to Jhupal. It is a short trekking day, therefore you will have enough time to rest.

Taking a flight from Jhupal, you fly back to Nepalgunj. After landing at the airport, you will soon board for the flight back to Kathmandu. The rest of the day is leisure for you.

You can go on a sightseeing tour and visit the local market. Stroll on the bustling streets of Thamel and buy souvenirs. Later, end your 26th day with a farewell dinner organized by the company.

What to expect during Lower Dolpo Trek?

Lower Dolpo Trek is a wild and off-the-beaten adventure in the Himalayas. As the Dolpo region is located in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range, there is least to almost no rainfall in the monsoon. You get to see outstanding views of Kanjirowa Himal (6,883 m), Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Churen Himal Range, Norbung Kang (6,085 m), and many Tibetan mountain range. 

Talking about the trail, it is moderate. Still, you have to walk 6 to 7 hours a day while gaining altitude and that can be a little challenging. Therefore, we suggest you to be in sound health with good physical fitness and stamina to go on Lower Dolpo Trek. If you are someone new in the trekking, then we highly suggest you choose a little easier treks like Annapurna Base Camp Trek to Ghorepani Poon Hill trek.

Lower Dolpo Trek permit

If you are a FIT (Free Individual Trekker), then you cannot traverse in the Dolpo region. There are few parts of Nepal that are regulated by the government, and you need to get special permission to travel. Dolpo is among one of those regions. You need to be in at least a group of two people not including a guide. Plus, you have to trek with a government registered tour operator and licensed guide. Only, Lower Dolpo Trek permit is enough, and you will not need any other permits like TIMS Card, etc. 

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) Symptoms & Prevention

Acute mountain sickness is a general case that can be seen while a high altitude journey. As Lower Dolpo Trekking takes you to a high elevation, there are chances of altitude sickness during the journey. There are few factors that can trigger altitude sickness in an individual, and among them not adjusting your body with the altitude while gaining it is the most effective one.

  • Do not gain more than 500 meters in a day
  • Try to spend the night in lower altitude
  • Acclimatize properly at a lower altitude
  • Inform your guide immediately if any of the symptoms you see
  • Do not push yourself

Best time to go on Lower Dolpo Trek

Unlike any other parts of Nepal, Trekking in the Dolpo region is possible in monsoon (June to mid-September). Moreover, it is one of the best times to go on Lower Dolpo Trek because this is the only place where you can trek at this time of the year in Nepal. 

Other preferred time is autumn (October to November) and spring (March to April). Autumn has a very pleasant climate the makes walking and vies fantastic. While in spring, you have to take snow gear as the region has still in influence of snowfall from the past winter. 

Accommodation during Lower Dolpo Trek

Lower Dolpo Trek is a camping trek. We will carry all our tents and necessities with us during the trek. You will get a single high-quality sleeping tent and other tents like a dining tent and washroom tent will be shared with other members of the group. We offer high-quality tents that are specifically made for spending the night at the Himalayas. 

Similarly, in cities, you stay overnight in a three-star hotel or a tourist standard hotel as per your budget. There will be all kinds of services available in the cities. 

Food & Water on Lower Dolpo Trek

During Lower Dolpo Trek 20 Days, you will get three meals a day that includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As it is a camping trek, all the meals will be prepared by our crew members. We will offer you delicious and hygienic meals. You will have good options to choose from for meals. Dishes like dal bhat, veggies, eggs, bread, pudding, noodles, pasta, sandwich, toast, soup, etc will be available. 

Water is available in every teahouse. You can carry water purification tablets for extra safety. Make sure to carry 2L of reusable water bottles that can last you throughout the trail. We highly encourage you not to buy plastic water bottles in the way as it will help to reduce the waste.
