About Baruntse Expedition

Baruntse Expedition allows you to explore the hidden corners of the Khumbu region. Located very close to Mt. Everest and Mt. Makalu, Baruntse stands 7,129 meters above sea level. Climbing Mt. Baruntse offers a less crowded journey in the Himalayas and trodden trekking experience. Summited in 1954 via the southeast ridge, Baruntse Peak offers an adventurous and a lifetime journey. 

During the Baruntse Expedition, you will be exploring the remote mountain villages and beautiful valleys passing through dense alpine forests. We have designed our Baruntse Expedition itinerary including Mera Peak Climbing as well. Baruntse Expedition 36 Days is an ultimate challenge one can have in the Himalayas. Itinerary

Your journey in the Himalayas begins with landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport at Kathmandu. After landing at the airport, you meet with our airport representatives around the terminal gate waiting with your nameplate. He will welcome and take you to the hotel. In the evening, you meet with other team members over a welcome dinner organized by the company.

This is a preparation day. Before that, you go on a guided sightseeing tour of UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the holy Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhnath Stupa, and Swayambhunath. In the afternoon, you meet with your expedition team leader and prepare for the trip. You go through all the documents and gears for the final packing.

After having a delicious breakfast, you drive to the airport to take an early morning thrilling flight to Lukla. Upon landing at the airport, you meet with other crew members who will join you for the expedition. The trail passes through lush forests and descends to Shurke village. From here, you ascend and reach Pakhapani and continue trekking towards Paiya through dense forests.

From Paiya, you trek and reach a wooden bridge. Crossing the bridge, you ascend towards Kari La Pass. The trail further passes through lush forests of bamboo and rhododendron on a narrow mountain trail. The trail offers beautiful views of Dudh Koshi Valley and Dudh Kund Himal.

After having breakfast, you begin descending through a lovely rhododendron forest. The trail passes through numerous mani walls and lush hillsides. Enjoying the striking views of Mera Peak and Naulekh Peak, you walk on a zigzag trail through the forested path. The trail descends along a steep and a pass by another dense forest of rhododendron & pine to take you to Nigmsa.

Today, the trail moves along a narrow and steep mountain trail. Trekking through lush forests, you reach near a stream and continue walking through a lush forest. Further, the trail passes by rhododendron forests and descends through a bamboo forest to take you to Chetra Khola.

Leaving Chetra Khola behind, you follow a trail that leads to a vantage point from where you can see striking views of Hinku Valley and Mera Peak. The trail then passes through pine and bamboo forests, where you might get to see sloths, wild cats, and other wild lives. Further, the trail ascends to Kothe.

The trail moves along Hinku Khola and takes you to Gondishung, which is a summer herder settlement area. Further, following the west bank of Hinku Drangka, you pass by 200-years-old Lungsumgba Gomba. A short walk from the gompa will take you to Tangnang.

Today is a rest day at Tangnang village. You go on a short hike to Charpate Himal Glacier, which will help your body adjust with the altitude. You get to see breath-taking views of Mera Peak and the surrounding area from this peak.

The trail today heads to Mera Base Camp. Following the lateral moraine of Dig Glacier, you reach Dig Kahrka. You get to see surreal views of Charpate Himal. Further, the trail ascends through moraines to the snout of the Hinku Nup and Shar Glaciers. You continue climbing on a steep path and reach Khare.

This is another rest day. You prepare for the expedition and go on a short hike. Your guide will teach you the basic skill of ice climbing.

Following a rock-strewn path, you ascend towards Mera High Camp. The trail will be tough and rugged. Upon reaching the High Camp, you set up the camp from where you can see gorgeous sunrise and sunset.

You wake up around 2:00 AM and push towards the top of Mera Peak. Climbing Mera Peak before moving towards Mt. Baruntse will help you gain confidence and acclimatize with the altitude. The trail gradually ascends to the summit of Mera Peak. As you will gain elevation the air will get thinner and the trail will get tougher. Your team leader will attach the fixed ropes as per the need. Upon reaching the summit of Mera Peak, you get to see superb views of the Himalayas like Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse, Baruntse, Kanchenjunga, Nuptse, etc. Later, you descend to Kongma Dingma to spend the night.

It is an extra day that can be used in case of an emergency of bad weather. If there are no unseen obstacles, you will follow the same itinerary and can use this extra day in the city.

The trail climbs to Seto Pokhari. After having breakfast, you follow the trail that leads to the upper Hongu Basin. On the way, you get to see outstanding views of snow-capped mountains and wilderness of Hongu Valley along with Mt. Chamlang.

Today, the trail ascends to Baruntse Base Camp. Crossing the wide grassy area filled with boulders, you climb to the base camp. As you move further, the valley gets barren and offers mesmerizing views of surrounding mountains.

From here onwards, you are going to climb to the top of Mt. Baruntse. Following the guide of your team leader, you slowly ascend to the summit. On the way, you will set a few camps to spend the night as well. Climbing Mt. Baruntse is tough. You have to cross many technical and tough sections. After touching the summit, you drop down to the base camp to spend the lower camps.

Today is a rest day at the Baruntse Base Camp. You spend the day relaxing and enjoying delicious meals. Likewise, you also clean the base camp and pack all the gears.

The trail ascends on a rugged moraine towards Imja Valley. On the way, you get to see panoramic views of many Himalayan mountains. The trail will gradually lead you to Amphu Lapcha Base Camp for the night stay.

After having a warm breakfast, you follow the trail that leads to the north side of the base camp. Crossing Amphu Lapcha Pass (5,845m), you descend to the north base camp.

From the base camp, the trail descends along a moraine to Chukung. Following Imja Khla and Dudh Koshi River, you move towards Pangboche village. Here, you will visit an ancient monastery.

The trail from Pangboche village descends through the alpine forest. You then ascend and reach Tengboche village. Visiting the oldest and the biggest monastery of the Khumbu region, Tengboche monastery, you descend steeply to Dudh Koshi River. Further, the trail ascends steeply and takes you to Namche Bazar.

Leaving Namche Bazar behind, you descend following a steep forested path. The trail goes through dense forests, crossing numerous streams and small villages. The trail will take you to Phakding from where you ascend through a forested path to reach Lukla.

After early morning breakfast, you take a short flight back to Kathmandu. During the fight, you get o see the last views of the Himalayas. Upon landing at Kathmandu airport, you move to the hotel. Relax for the day as nothing is planned.

It is an extra day in Kathmandu. You can use this day if there will be no unseen circumstances during the climbing. In the evening, you have a farewell dinner with the rest of the team members. End the day exploring the vibrant streets of Thamel.

You get a move to the airport as per your flight departure time. One of our team members will assist you during the check-out and drive you to the airport.

What to expect during the Baruntse Expedition?

Baruntse Expedition is a strenuous mountain to climb. The journey is challenging and requires previous trekking and climbing experience. The route that leads to the summit of Mt. Baruntse involves numerous technical and steep parts. You have to be in strong physical fitness, health, and mindset to complete the journey. Moreover, you will also be scaling Mera Peak that will help you boost your confidence.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) Symptoms & Prevention

Altitude sickness is a common illness one can suffer while climbing a mountain. As you will be gaining significant elevation during the journey, it is very important to maintain your body condition as well. To make sure the team does not have to go through AMS, we have added ample rest days in our Baruntse Expedition. You will be spending several days acclimatizing your body before pushing towards the summit.

Symptoms of altitude sickness

  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath with exertion

Preventive measures

  • Include an adequate number of rest days in the itinerary
  • Keep yourself hydrated
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages
  • Do not gain more than 500 meters in a day
  • Try to spend the night in lower altitude
  • Acclimatize properly at a lower altitude
  • Inform your guide immediately if any of the symptoms you see
  • Do not push yourself

Best time to go to Baruntse Expedition

The best time for Baruntse Expedition is post-monsoon i.e. from October till January. The weather is mostly stable and pleasant during this time of the year. Likewise, the views are also at its best with a clear sky. The trail gets bloomed up with numerous types of floras and vegetation as well. 

Accommodation during Baruntse Expedition

During Baruntse Expedition, you stay overnight in the teahouse and camps. Teahouses are available in the villages at a lower elevation. The teahouse in this part of Nepal offers quite basic facilities with a shared room and washroom. While climbing, you stay overnight in tents. We offer branded sleeping tents to each member of the group with a shared dining and washroom tents. All the tents will be carried by our crew members.

Food & Water on Baruntse Expedition

While spending nights in the teahouse, you get meals as per their menu. Dishes like rice, curries, meat, egg, porridge, pudding, pasta, toast, sandwich, momo, soup, noodles, etc can be seen on the menu. While climbing, all the meals will be prepared and cooked by our trained crew members. We have precisely designed the meal options during the climbing, adding enough delicious dishes to choose from.
