About Nar Phu Valley Trek

Nar Phu Valley Trek leads to the most isolated part of the Annapurna region. Nar and Phu are two separate villages, which are at day walking distance from each other. Trekking in Nar Phu Valley is opened since 2003. You need to get a special permit from the government to go on this trek. Here, you will get to experience the rich culture and tradition of Tibetan inhabitants. You get to see the wonderful landscape and stunning views of Himalayas during the Nar Phu Valley Trekking.

During the Nar Phu Valley Trek, you pass through a glacier, high pass, narrow gorge, and dense forests. The trail is incredibly beautiful. As you will spend the day in Nar and Phu villages, you will get to see the lifestyle of the locals. You will explore Buddhist gompa and stupas. The trail is challenging, and you need to be in good shape. If you have previous trekking experience, it will get easy for you to walk and adapt to the environment easily.

As you enter in Nepal, you get to witness green hills, settlement areas, and snow-capped mountains at far distant. After landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport, you get welcomed by our team representative at the terminal gate. He will take you to the hotel, and later, in the evening, you will have a welcome dinner organized by the company.

We have organized a guided sightseeing tour for you during which you visit several monuments like Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath Temple, and Boudhnath Stupa. These places are part of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You get guided by a professional tour guide who will brief you about these monuments.

After having breakfast, you begin driving towards Ngadi. The drive will be scenic and long. You get to see beautiful views of hills, terraced farms, and small villages on the way to Ngadi.

The trail today moves towards Jagat. Trekking through lush forests and small villages, you reach Jagat.

From Jagat, you descend to a river and continue trekking through lush forest. The trail then ascends to a sharp-edged cliff and pass by Chamje. Enjoying striking views of Mt. Annapurna, you cross a suspension bridge and gradually ascends on a steep and slippery trail that leads to Sattale. From here you pass by Tal and Karte villages and reach Dharapani.

Trekking through pine and fir forests, you reach Bagarchaap. From here, the trail continues to Danaque and steeply ascends to Timang. You get to enjoy a lovely view of Mt. Manaslu and Peak 29. Further, you trek through lush pine forest till Latamarang, where you will take a small lunch break. You then pass by another forest and reach Koto.

The trail move towards Nar Phu Valley. Trekking in a steep and narrow path through dense forests, you reach dark gorge Nar Phu Khola. The trail then slowly ascends steeply through forests of bamboo and pine. On the way, you pass by many caves and timber camps. Crossing Phu Khola, you descend to a hot spring and passing by a waterfall, you reach Dharmashala.

After having breakfast, the trail ascends and crosses a stream. Further, ascending along a small river, you reach Meta, which is a temporary winter settlement of Nar village.

Today, it is going to be a hard day. You will cross a maze of glacier moraines. The trail offers stunning views of low shrubs, juniper, orange, and brick-red leafy bushes, rocks, and sandy trail. You will come across a trail junction. From here, you trek and pass by Jhunam and reach Chyakhu. Further, you pass by several chortens and reach Kyang from where you get to see amazing views of Annapurna II, Pisang Peak, and Gyoji Kang.

The trail passes through the desert-like gorge and descends steeply along a riverbank. On the way, you get to see superb views of colorful chortens with canyonlands and gorges. Also, if you are lucky, you might get to see blue sheep. Passing through Phupi Gyalgen Gate, you descend. From here, you pass by an ancient gate that leads to Phu village.

Today, you explore around Phu village and rest. Interact with locals and get to see their unique lifestyle and culture. Also, go on a short hike to the summer grazing settlement or Ngoru Kharka. You will have plenty of time to talk with locals and observe their daily chores.

The trail gradually ascends towards Phu Pass. The trail will be rocky and steep. From the pass, you get to see the stunning landscape. The trail then descends to Yak Kharka, where you will spend the night.

Today, you will cross another pass, Pangi Pass. The trail ascends on a rugged path and leads you to top of the pass from where you can see beautiful views. Later, you descend to Chhubche Kharka for a night stay.

After having breakfast, you begin trekking towards Nar village. The trail passes through a rugged path along with offering superb scenery.

Nar is one of the unspoiled villages in Nepal. Compared to Phu village, Nar is more lively. Spend the day exploring around and talking with locals. Visit ancient gomaps, observe villages painting prayer flags, harvesting crops, chatting, spinning prayer wheel, indulged in carpentry, etc.

After a memorable time in Nar & Phu villages, today you ascend towards Kang La Phedi. The trail offers an excellent view of Kang Garu Peak and Pisang Peak. Trekking through grazing fields and small villages, you reach Kang La Phedi.

It is going to be a long trekking day. You begin trekking early in the morning and reach the top of Kang La Pass from where you can witness fantastic views of Annapurna II, Tilicho Peak, Pisang Peak, and Mt. Gangapurna. The trail then descends to Ngwal, a beautiful old village.

After having breakfast, you begin trekking towards Talekhu. The trail passes through lush forests and small villages along with offering superb landscape views.

Trekking through small villages and forested paths, you move towards Dharapani. You get to enjoy the beautiful scenery on the way.

Leaving Dharapni behind, you retrace the previous path towards Jagat. On the way, you get accompanied by lovely scenery. Today is also the last day of trekking.

Enjoying spectacular views of rolling lush green hills, colorful terraced fields, scattered settlement areas, rivers, cascading waterfalls, and dense forests, you drive back to Kathmandu. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you head back to the hotel.

It is a rest day. You can explore around and do some shopping. If you want, we can arrange a guided sightseeing tour for you as well. In the evening, you will have a farewell dinner organized by the company.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) Symptoms & Prevention

Nar Phu Valley Trekking is a high altitude trek that involves the risk of altitude sickness, which is also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). This happens when your body did not get acclimatize properly with the elevation. It is very important to protect yourself from AMS to complete the trek. As in worse can it can ruin the entire journey. Therefore, we take a very careful ascent profile with ample rest days and take all necessary measures to aim to prevent AMS - see more information below.

  • Keep yourself hydrated

  • Inform your guide immediately if any of the symptoms you see

Nar Phu Valley Trek difficulty

Nar Phu Valley Trek is a difficult trek to the most isolated part of the Annapurna region. The trail is mostly well-made, however high altitude, steep & rugged path, and terrain make is little difficult overall. You need to walk 6 to 7 hours a day. For all these, good physical fitness, health, and will-power are needed. If you have prior trekking experience, then it will help you a lot during the trek.

Best time to go to Nar Phu Valley Trek

As per our experience, October to November (autumn) and March to April (spring) is the best time to go on Nar Phu Valley Trekking. The trail during this time of the year is very beautiful and rewarding. You will get to see colorful rhododendron and other numerous floras bloomed all over the trail in spring. Whereas, in autumn, Nepal celebrates numerous festivals including the most significant ones. The weather is temperate and the sky is clear. Views are also at its best.

Accommodation during Nar Phu Valley Trek

Nar Phu Valley Trek is a teahouse trek. The teahouse is run by locals and the facilities are pretty basic. The ambiance more turns to a homely vibe than a hotel in the tea house. You can find a hot shower, twin-sharing rooms, and limited furniture in the room. We highly recommend you to carry a good sleeping bag with yourself. Likewise, the dining area is the common space and the warmest place in the teahouse, where you can spend some time and warm up yourself.

Food & Water on Nar Phu Valley Trek

During the Nar Phu Valley Trek, all meals will be served as per the menu of the tea house. The menu will have a diverse variety from a sandwich to porridge. While traveling with us, we will select the best home-cooked for you that is not only hygienic, delicious, and nutritious, but also are affordable and filling. You will be given three meals a day. If you feel hungry any other time, you are free to munch on your own expenses. Likewise, boiled water is available in the teahouse. You can refill your bottle every time it gets empty paying a small fee. Don't buy plastic water bottles as it will be very expensive and increase waste.
