About Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is one of the most adventurous trekking journeys to explore unspoiled nature and pristine scenery. Kanchenjunga region is extremely isolated and thriving in the same hundreds of years old culture and lifestyle. The terrain, flora, fauna, and locals here, unlike any other place. Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking will take you to the eastern part of Nepal close to India and Tibet border. This trek leads to the base of the world's third highest mountain, Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m). During the trek, you get to witness wonderful landscapes and stunning views of the Himalayas. The trail is less crowded and quaint. You will have a solid time with yourself.

Kanchenjunga is also known as, Five Great Treasures of the Snow that represents Gold, Silver, Precious Stones, Grain, and Holy Scriptures. This mountain has a huge religious belief and believed to be the abode of deities. During the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, you trek through tropical forests of oak, rhododendron, chestnuts, etc. The trail also passes through a lovely village, where you get to see the rich culture and lifestyle of the people Rai community. Moreover, villages here are also influenced by Tibetan culture and lifestyle. The trail offers ancient monasteries and stupas.

As you enter in Nepal, you get to witness green hills, settlement areas, and snow-capped mountains at far distant. After landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport, you get welcomed by our team representative at the terminal gate. He will take you to the hotel, and later, in the evening, you will have a welcome dinner organized by the company.

We have organized a guided sightseeing tour for you during which you visit several monuments like Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath Temple, and Boudhnath Stupa. These places are part of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You get guided by a professional tour guide who will brief you about these monuments.

You will take an early morning flight to Bhadrapur. From here, you drive to Illam enjoying the wonderful scenery. Illam is the largest tea estate in Nepal.

After having breakfast, you drive to Taplejung. The drive will offer a lovely countryside view. Passing through Phidim, you reach Limbu village in Taplejung.

Trekking through lush green hills and villages, you come across fields of paddies. The trail further goes through terraced fields and continues along the Tamor River to Mitlung.

Today, the trail passes through beautiful villages of Tamang and Limbu. Further, you pass by landslide debris and boulder area and descend to Thiwa Khola. From here, you will cross a wooden bridge and reach Chiruwa.

From Chiruwa, the trail passes through Taplethok, Hellok, and Lelep villages. You then move along Tamor River and descend to Simbu Khola. Further, trekking through steep and narrow Ghunsa Khola Valley, you reach Sukathum.

The trail moves along the Ghunsa Khola and heads to Amjilosa. You then ascend on a steep path enjoying fantastic landscape views. Crossing several bridges over Ghunsa Khola, you reach Amjilosa, a beautiful Tibetan village.

Passing through lush forests of bamboo and rhododendron, the trail ascends to Gyabla. Before reaching this village, you pass by a big beautiful waterfall. The trail also includes steep ascents and descents.

From Gyabla village, you trek through lush meadow. The trail ascends to a small hill and drops down to a river. Crossing the river, you reach Ghunsa, which is a lovely Tibetan village with a small health post, wooden houses, school, and micro-hydro power plant.

Today, you spend the day in Ghunsa. It is a rest day. You go on a short hike to the opposite side of Ghunsa Khola. Later, in the day, you will visit monasteries and interact with locals.

The trail passes through lush forest and further moves along the south bank of Ghunda Khola. You then pass by many chortens and mani walls. Trekking through scree slope and glacial moraines, you reach Khangpachen. This village will welcome you with a superb north face of Mt. Jannu (7,710 m).

Following a trial on the left side of Kanchenjunga Glacier, you hike along a high plateau to reach Lhonak. Upon reaching Lhonak, you get to see panoramic views of Mera Peak, Nepal Peak, Wegde Peak, and many others.

Today, the trail leads you to the north base camp of Kanchenjunga. Trekking along a glacier on the northern ridge, you reach the base camp. This camp is also called Pang Pema. From here, you get to witness panoramic views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and many other Himalayan mountains.

After having light breakfast, you retrace the tail to Ghunsa. Relishing spectacular views of landscape and mountains, you descend and pass by Lhonak and Khangpachen. Further, walking on the moraines of Kanchenjunga Glacier and Kumbhakarna Glacier, you reach Ghunsa.

Trekking on a steep rugged trail through forested path of rhododendron, pine & birch, you move to the High Camp. On the way, you get to witness amazing views of many snow-capped mountains like Jaanu, Temachuggi, etc.

It is going to be a challenging day as you will cross two passes today. From the High Camp, the trail moves to Sele La Pass and then to Sinion Pass. You get to see the spectacular landscapes from the top of both passes. Further, the trail descends to Tseram, where you will be spending the night.

It is going to be a long trekking day. Trekking through Yalung Glacier moraine, you ascend towards Ramche. On the way, you will come across a beautiful lake and meadow. If you are lucky, you can spot blue sheep grazing on the grassy hills. Upon reaching Ramche, you will rest and visit a small monastery.

It is an acclimatization day. You explore the village and go on a hike to Yalung Base Camp. The trail to the base camp passes through glacial moraines and rugged path. Crossing Oktang, you get to see wonderful views of Mt. Jaanu, Mt. Kanchenjunga, and many other mountains.

The trail follows the same path and take you to Anda Phedi. You get to see stunning views of snow-capped peaks and blue sheep on grassy slopes. The trail descends through moraines of Yalung Glacier and pass by Lapsang and Tserma to lead you to Anda Phedi.

Descending through dense forests of rhododendron and bushes, you move towards Tortong. On the way, you come across streams, monasteries, chortens, and waterfalls.

The trail descends to Amji Khola and cross Lasiya Bhanjyang (3,310 m) and Dhupo Bhanjyang (2,620 m). Further, you descend and reach Yamphudin, villages resided by people from different ethnic groups.

From Yamphudim, you descend to Khebang and pass through valleys, forests, and waterfalls. You will then cross many streams over suspension bridges and walk along Kabeli Khola to reach Khebang.

Enjoying wonderful views of the Himalayan mountains, you trek to Khamidinghe. The trail passes through lush forests and waterfalls.

After having breakfast, you drive to Birtamod. During the drive, you get to see the striking view of rivers, hills, mountains, and small villages.

Today, you either drive or fly to Kathmandu. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you move to the hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to rest and explore around.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a teahouse trek. The facilities here are very basic- a small room with a bed, blanket, and pillow to spend the night. The rooms are generally on a sharing basis with most likely to have a common washroom. One thing to note is that rooms are not insulated and it can get cold in day & night, therefore make sure to carry a nice sleeping bag. The dining/kitchen space is more like a common lounge area, where you can warm up yourself.

Food & Water on Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

The food opting gets pretty basic in this region. There is nothing much to choose from. You can find dishes from cuisines like Nepali, Indian, and Tibetan. Likewise, along the trail, you can find snacks and bars in the teashops. Go for dal bhat and tarkari, as it is the most affordable and filling option to have. Plus, it will keep you running throughout the day. Also, know that as the elevation will increase the food option gets very limited and expensive.

You can find water to refill your water bottle every couple of hours. Carry water purification tablets or any device to purify your water. Likewise, you can get boiled water from teahouse either for free or paying a few bucks. Bottled water can get insanely expensive, and it is also not wise to buy it for one single-use and throw away.
